This Year’s Scholarship Recipients
The Society of Women Environmental Professionals of Greater Philadelphia (SWEP) is pleased to announce the 2010/2011 Academic Calendar Scholarship recipients. Each year, SWEP of Greater Philadelphia awards one undergraduate and one graduate scholarship to women studying to pursue environmental careers. SWEP presents these scholarships to outstanding young women as part of its mission to encourage and promote the leadership, achievement, and professional development of women in the environmental field. This year’s undergraduate recipient is Emily Kinsel a Temple University junior with a major in Environmental Studies. The graduate recipient is Caroline D’Angelo a University of Pennsylvania student pursuing a masters of Environmental Studies.
Emily Kinsel co-founded an organization at Temple University, the Philadelphia Urban Creators, a youth-led urban farming organization based in North Philadelphia. She studied abroad last summer in France to research organic farming methods and hopes to return after graduation to study food security issues in France. She intends to publish a children’s book on farming and the environment, which she plans to share with youth in North Philadelphia. Emily’s ultimate career goal is to either work in sustainable farming or to teach youth about environmental protection.
Caroline D’Angelo has a diverse background in the environmental field which has included author of a blog to promote environmentalism with Christians, data technician for the Nature Conservancy and public relations with Friends of the Earth. She also co-founded and runs an initiative for the University of Pennsylvania to publish an academic journal focused on women and water issues. Caroline is an intern for the Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership in the Wharton School of Business, which seeks to promote sustainable practices in business. Caroline’s ultimate career goal is to work in environmental policy for either a non-governmental organization or the government.
Congratulations to each of this year’s scholarship recipients and all of the applicants. The Scholarship Committee was fortunate to have received applications from many very strong candidates whose achievements and dedication to the environmental field will no doubt one day result in the future leaders for the environmental field.
